Parlophone Record

TITANIUM BY DAVID GUETTA   FEAT.SIA

The is was created by David Guetta and it was feat Sia.

It was released in 2011.
Genre: House, Dance/Electric

The music video begins with a close up of a boy holding his head and kneeling on the floor.  This demonstrates that the boy is in distressed and confused. The camera pans around and zooms out; the audience is able to see the destroyed school hall around him. This was obviously caused by him as he is the only one in the school. As he walks away, he keeps looking around as he is cautious of his surroundings as if he is scared himself. By starting this way, it makes the audience to question what is going on which pushes them to see what happens next.

The camera first pans around him and then tracks him as he starts running. The teachers are scared of as it's clearly seen in the facial expression and body language as the cower away; as they believe he is too strong or dangerous for them.

As the boy is riding, the pace of the music speeds up conveying that he rushing to escape. As he slows down, the music slows down as well. The music matches the boys speed. While he is riding, there are jumps cuts and close ups of him riding the bike this also allows the audience to take part with the action. Industry is reflected through the use of multiple shots of the bike demonstrating the professionalism

The next shot is a wide angle shot of the boy in his room. He quickly packing as if he is trying to escape. While packing, he throws a teddy bear behind; suggesting that he is throwing his childhood away.

The audience is able to see his telepathic powers for the first time as he uses it to lift the keys and make objects float. One of the objects is a bear which demonstrates the boy is leaving is childhood. This happens is slow motion; creating a sense of tension which attracts the audience attention

Throughout the whole music video, the boy is seen alone suggesting that he is isolated due to his powersAt the end of the video, the police catch up to him in the forest. He curls up in the same position as he was in the beginning of video.

Applying Goodwin's theory: The video is like a short film- the young boy is different from everyone else and is looked down. The lyrics do link to the meaning of the story and music video.

Target audience:

15 to 30 year old.
The actor in the music video is a young adult which allows the audience to relate to him. The music video is like a story which would attract the audience to watch the video.
Furthermore, it fast-paced which allows the audience to be part of the action.
As the song is mainstream, it follows the conventions of the music video. This is demonstrated when the visual images matches with the lyrics. However, the singers are not seen in the music video.

Queen- I want to break free

Begins with the band logo which is perhaps influenced by the Queens Crest Logo.
Linking to Goodwin's theory, there is intertextual reference to the long-running drama 'Coronation street' due to the establishing shot of the chimneys and terraced streets, which the target  audience would recognise. The shot moves to 1980's kettle-cloak. The technology looks like its going to explode as its steaming and moving a lot. The audience is introduced to one of the band members in a close up shot. It is Brian May but dressed up as a middle-aged woman.

The next shot is a close up of a 1950's vacuum cleaner. It zooms out and the audience is able to Freddie Mercury, but he is also dressed up as a woman. He is pointy chest, glamorised housewife, even though he is dressed as a woman, his costume is sexualised and short. There are four men who are dressed up as women in the house. The music starts to play and Freddie sing 'I want to break free'- suggesting that he is not happy and he wants to escape the domestic environment. The video was set in the 1950's; at the time women were meant to stay at home, cook and clean. By making this video and dressed up as women, the band is making the audience aware of women and their struggles with freedom. Furthermore, it was a coming out message to his audience as he 'trying to breaking free'

As the camera moves, the audience is able to see the other members of the band but are dressed up as women with heavy makeup

The shot is of Freddie as he opens the door to the cupboard under the stairs; this leads to another universe. Freddie is surrounded by miners who have their flash light on.

In the next shot, Freddie is in a cave where he is dressed up as an alien; this is clearly a dream due to his costume. He is surrounded by people with the same costume as him.

Goodwin's theory-  perfomance based as the main character is singing and looking directly at the camera

The music video targets its audience through dressing themselves as women. This highlights that women want to 'break free' from domestic work.
Industry is reflected through the music video as it has a high production value. It has a high budget which is seen through the costumes, location and miss-en-scene
There is intertextual reference to the long-running drama 'Coronation street' due to the establishing shot of the chimneys and terraced streets, which the target  audience would recognise.

Adele- Hello

The whole video is in a grainy filter, similar to a photos from early 1900's. This effect creates a sense of remembering the past. Linking to Roland Barthes' Semiotic theory, in the close up shot of a window, there are dead lady birds at the bottom of the window. This perhaps connotes death or the end of a relationship.

The camera focus changes to outside of the window- a car is driving down a long curvy road

-We are first introduced to Adele in close up of her talking on the phone. The diegetic sound of her speaking on the phone. As she loses connection. she repeats 'hello', reflecting the title of the song. -The audience voyeristically watches Adele outside the window and inside the home as removes the dirty sheets. Removal of the sheets connotes starting a new life or returning to the past.

-As Adele opens her eyes, the music starts to play, suggesting it is personal, especially since she holds eye contact with the audience for a couple seconds, This also demonstrates that she is sing it for the audience.

The shot moves to different aspects of the house but are blurred, giving a sense that she is lost and confused.

After the camera pans around Adele- There is a brief memory of the past, it is a point of view shot of a man laughing and smiling. As the door closes, Adele returns to reality, she smiles and open the same door and returns to the past. There are props on a desk, which Adele lightly touches and goes through, further highlighting that she is returning to the past

The lyrics Adele is singing matches the visual image of the video: 'A million miles away'- a flash back of a man walking away. 'Hello from the other side'- A man is waving at the camera. When Adele is singing, the audience is able to see a lot of emotions in her facial expressions representing that that she is regretting something and this is a personal song to her.

The shots back and forth the man and Adele suggest they had a strong relationship and were obviously lovers. 'Tear me apart'- The man walks away demonstrating an end to their relationship

Todorov's theory:

Equilibrium- The two characters are a happy couple in the flashback
Disruption of the equilibrium- the couple broke up
Recognition of the disruption- Adele goes back to the house where the couple used to live
Repairing of damages- Adele tries to call her ex-lover
New equilibrium- couple gone different direction

Target audience: fans of Adele would buy the song, audiences can relate to being heartbroken and depressed. She is mainstream

How is the record label reflected in the product?: The industry is reflect through the high production value and high budget. This is seen through the use of many locations

How is ML used to construct the representation of an individual or social groups  Representation is done through the narrative. The music video has a story line which 30 to 49 year old should relate to as they perhaps experience being heart broken and having a broken relationship.
How is this used to construct meaning for the audience: The music video, address to an older audience as it includes props which is recognisable by the target audience; for example, the use of the rotary telephones and the flip

Beyonce- If I were a boy

The song was recorded by Beyonce, the main character is also played by her. The message in the music video demonstrates a Male point of view of a relationship and how it can be emotionally damaging for the other person. The music is influenced by folk rock, which includes guitars, drums and string instruments. The song is in the genre of romantic slow pop.

The music video begins with in a black and white filter; this creates a sense of watching an old movie. This also perhaps conveys Beyonce's feeling of sadness and depressed. The audience is introduced to the main characters in the video in a close up shot, Beyonce and a man. The diegetic sound is from both the characters as they give one-word answer of the aspects of a relationship.

The first location is in a kitchen as Beyonce enters the room. A kitchen is normally associated with women and them cooking. However in the music video, the man is in the one in the kitchen, cooking and serving the food (roles reversed).

As the video continues Beyonce is acting like a man (the one who wears the pants). Furthermore, her occupation is a policewoman- it is a male dominated job. Fighting against bad men and being dominant.

Her is persona is carefree. The man she is working with is extremely close to her and looking at her inappropriately. This could suggest that they are having an affair. Whereas the "husband" is in an office. The audience is able to see his assistant in a scanty dress but he is not interested in her as he is buying a gift for his wife

In the music video, Beyonce is sexualised. This is clearly seen in her police costume and when she is changing. The camera is focused on her body, almost like a Male gaze
Goodwin's theory- the audience is voyueristically watching her

She is not interested in her husband as she ignores his calls and carries on to sit close to her 'friend'. Furthermore, in the next shot, Beyonce and her husband are in a club, while Beyonce is dancing with another man, while her husband watches her. Beyonce is implying that this is what men usually do and do not pay attention to the other person

"Why are you so jealous..."- the roles reverse to reality. The ending mimics the beginning but the characters are in different roles. The man is the policeman and Beyonce is the one who gets hurt.

Representation of is used in the narrative. It is based around men wronging women who they're in a relationship with and having double standards of women. The target audience would relate to this as they may have similar issues.
The industry is reflected through the music video as it has high production value. Furthermore, the music video also has a high budget which is reflected through the use of various locations, costume and the cinematography.
